Paleo – what is it actually?
Paleo is also known as the Stone Age diet, paleo diet or paleo lifestyle.
Paleo refers to a form of nutrition that is based on the diet of people in the Paleolithic Age. Or how we assume people ate back then. This includes vegetables, meat, fish, seafood, shellfish, eggs, fruit, herbs, nuts and honey.
The food should be as natural and original as possible. Dairy and cereal products should be avoided. Industrially processed foods such as sugar, alcohol and ready meals should be avoided completely.
Advocates of the Paleo lifestyle believe that many lifestyle diseases, such as diabetes, high blood pressure and allergies, etc., can be prevented. can be traced back to the “inappropriate” diet of people today. In contrast to our genes, the industrial processing of our food has changed too quickly.
Paleo is not a diet as we understand it today, as it is not about counting calories or FDH, nor is it necessarily about losing weight. If you eat a paleo diet, the pounds will fall off by themselves and almost incidentally. The main aim is to lead a healthy and fit life. The Paleo lifestyle not only includes a healthy diet, but also what we know today as “work-life balance” – incorporating enough exercise into our everyday lives and getting enough sleep at night.
I think this holistic approach is a great advantage of Paleo. After all, this is exactly what it should be about, as all areas of our lives are closely interlinked and mutually dependent.
As the Paleo diet should be balanced, i.e. contain enough fats, proteins and carbohydrates, the risk of malnutrition is very low. Of course, the changeover is very difficult for many people, as we Germans have mostly eaten bread, potatoes and pasta since childhood. And it’s a bit more awkward to “just go and get something quickly” at first, as you can no longer go to the bakery around the corner. But the range of good and healthy snacks is getting bigger and bigger and at some point you know where to get something healthy.
If you go to a restaurant for a meal, this is no longer a problem from a “Paleo point of view”, as most restaurants are now all so flexible and offer meat or fish with vegetables/salad. And more and more restaurants are paying attention to the quality of their products and avoiding flavor enhancers and the like.
I can only recommend everyone to give Paleo a try and test it out for themselves. Everyone has to decide for themselves how strictly they implement it in the end, but every roll, every sweet snack and every pizza that is left out has a positive effect on our body, mind and soul…
