Strictly speaking, the strawberry is not a member of the berry family, but belongs to the aggregate fruit family.
The strawberry – the low-calorie alternative to snacking
We call the whole strawberry a fruit, but botanically speaking it is only the pseudo-fruit. The many small, yellow seeds (nuts) on the surface are the actual fruit.
Strawberries are a vitamin C bomb, containing more of the important vitamin than, for example, lemons or oranges. It is also rich in minerals such as potassium, calcium, zinc, iron and folic acid.
The secondary plant substances (polyphenols) it contains are said to help prevent cancer and cardiovascular diseases.
As strawberries are very low in calories, you can snack on them without feeling guilty.
